7/20/23 - I love this book from 1812 with maps of the world. I especially love the map of France with flags of European countries and America. I gave this map to my nephew, Eric Bottern. It also has six pages dedicated to images of coins. Interesting that this atlas was published in France in 1812, when French nationalism must have been at an all-time high. This was before the Russia campaign, which Napolean lost, before he was exiled to Elba, escaped from Elba and then defeated, in 1815, at Waterloo (just outside of Brussels) and then exiled to St. Helena, an island in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa. From Google search..."Geographical Dictionary, or Description of All Parts of the World," by Vosgien, refers to a series of French geographical dictionaries, often pseudonymous, with Jean-Baptiste Ladvocat identified as the original author or co-author. These works are essentially gazetteers, compiling geographical knowledge from the late 18th and 19th centuries, and often include maps, flags, and even coins. They were popular reference works that were periodically updated and re-published by various figures and publishers.Authorship: The name "Vosgien" is believed to be a pseudonym for Jean-Baptiste Ladvocat, an abbot who assisted Ladvocat in an earlier version of the text. The name is also associated with other editors who updated the work over time.Content: The dictionaries are organized alphabetically, detailing geographical entities such as kingdoms, provinces, cities, and regions, with information on physical features, populations, and administrative divisions. Many editions are illustrated with folding engraved maps.Editions: Numerous editions were published throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries, with variations in content, maps, and publishers.Updates: Later editions, such as those edited by Valentin Parisot, were "redesigned and upgraded" to reflect modern science at the time, with the removal of obsolete entries and the addition of new information. It was a universal geographical dictionary that contained information on the geography, history, and statistics of various regions around the world. The book was well-received and became a popular reference for scholars and geographers. It was later revised and updated by other authors, including Faber and Mellet, and continued to be used as a valuable resource for geographical information. Today, copies of the "Dictionnaire Géographique" can be found in various libraries and online bookstores.[1][2][3][4] Source: Perplexity.aihttps://prezi.com/p/6-pzuyiceuxd/napoleon-bonaparte-timeline/ Keyword: histtext
