"Man/Made," the title piece for this series, depicts the moment when humans begin to delight in manipulating the land, taking from it and reintroducing its elements as triumphs of mankind. 

My exhibition, Man/Made, speaks the development of human coexistence and manipulation of nature. The story begins with the life form that precedes humanity by hundreds of millions of years: trees. A lone tree stands on a wind-swept terrain. 

"Go Set A Watchman" depicts a child's interaction with the natural world. The child seeks to observe, enjoy, and take part in nature. 

"The First Watch" depicts a moment of awe and content with the surroundings.

"Stone Hill" represents early developments in shaping the natural landscape for human desires through agriculture. Nature remains in its essence, but with tree clearings for land optimization and fences for livestock management and property ownership.

With nature at the periphery, humans turn their attention to other interests, and their own self-interests. 

Nature gains an ominous quality as it comes to mark the outskirts of humanity. 

This piece depicts the awe-inspiring tranquility of the natural world that remains.

Yet the natural world becomes increasingly foreign to human civilization.

A new, manmade landscape emerges in place of the natural landscape.

Yet even these "manmade" structures become subject to neglect by their own creators. With the loss of its utilitarian purpose, this silo is now haunted by its obsoleteness. It now exists as an unnatural figure in the natural world, gradually overtaken by the natural elements it once overtook. 

"To Dust" represents the loss of both the natural world and the manmade creations that once filled it. 

I am Katie Maier '26, and I am a student painter and printmaker from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. My series for the Art Seen, "Man/Made," deals with human interaction with and manipulation of the natural world.
