Eadward Muybridge at 65.

In my view, Eadward Muybridge was a talented and flawed character. His talents speak for themself, but not so widely known is that he was born Edward Muggeridge and changed his name sometime in the 1870s. About the same time, in 1872, when he was 42, he married a woman who was 21 and then, two years later, after she had had an affair and a child with another man, Muybridge murdered that man. In explanation of his eccentric and erratic behavior, some historians (as well as his lawyers at the time) point to the fact that Muybridge had suffered a significant brain injury in 1860 in a freak stagecoach accident. In the murder trial in 1875, Muybridge was acquitted after his lawyers, who were paid for by Leland Stanford, argued that Muybridge had been driven by natural impulses to avenge his honor. Public sentiment largely sided with Muybridge, who lived another almost thirty years and continued his photography work. The project on horses commissioned by Stanford had started in 1872, about the same time he married the 21-year-old, and concluded in 1878, after the murder and trial in 1875.

Muybridge Statue in San Francisco

A statue of Muybridge was erected in 2005 in San Francisco at the Letterman Digital Arts Center, whose main tenant is Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic, creators of the Star Wars franchise. It’s worth noting that the two other statues erected at Letterman are of Yoda and Philo Farnsworth, inventor of the television. All of this and the history of Muybridge reminds me of my good friend, John Beans, who has remarked, “You never should meet your heroes.”

Eadweard Muybridge's photographs of a galloping horse marked a significant milestone in the history of photography and motion studies. In 1872, Leland Stanford, a former California governor and racehorse owner, commissioned Muybridge to settle a debate about horse locomotion12. Stanford believed that horses lifted all four hooves off the ground simultaneously during a gallop, a theory known as "unsupported transit"4.

After years of experimentation and technological improvements, Muybridge successfully captured a series of photographs in 1878 at Stanford's Palo Alto Stock Farm12. He set up 24 cameras along a racetrack, each triggered by trip wires as the horse galloped past25. The resulting images, known as "The Horse in Motion," proved Stanford's theory correct and revealed the precise mechanics of a horse's gait14.

This groundbreaking work not only settled the debate but also laid the foundation for the development of motion pictures2. Muybridge invented the zoopraxiscope, an early form of movie projector, to display his sequences15. His studies expanded to include various animals and humans, culminating in his 1887 portfolio "Animal Locomotion"24.Muybridge's work revolutionized our understanding of animal movement and significantly influenced both scientific and artistic communities2.
