Kiwanis Park playground

Today, Kiwanis park sits in place of the saw mills and a freeway roundabout sits where the proposed park was intended to go. It's unknown if the park was relocated or if development simply continued to accelerate in Brainerd.

Manganese Mine

Even in the distance, smoke stacks can be seen working. This detail is meant to highlight just how successful the urban environment is.

However, Manganese, Minnesota was only inhabited between 1912 and 1960. (This map was made in 1914.) The former mining community is now mostly abandoned.

A detailed look at the plans for the Cuyuna Range Addition. While some of this range still exists, most has since been redeveloped again. At the time, this addition would have meant room for numerous new residents, likely working in the ore mines.

Boat crossing under the Aerial Lift Bridge

The overcrowded harbor intends to highlight Duluth's waterfront popularity. For over a century, the Superior harbor is the country's largest, farthest-inland freshwater port.

This boat comes from the "City of Cleveland," showing it could have traveled from Ohio.

Duluth's Aerial Lift Bridge

In order to create the Duluth Ship Canal, a gap in the sand spit had to be created, which left new island residents (Lake Ave. side of the canal) without a means of crossing to the mainland. In 1892, almost a decade following the publication of this map, a contest was held to solve the issue, but the winner's design was rejected by the War Department. A few years following the contest, and inspired by the Vizcaya Bridge in France, Thomas McGilvray designed an aerial bridge gondola, which was completed in 1905. However, as Duluth's tourism and population continued to grow, the bridge needed to grow as well. C.A.P. Turner designed the current standing Aerial Lift Bridge, which lifted for the first time in 1930. Today, the bridge can be raised to full height (135 ft.) in a minute and is raised nearly 5,000 times per year. Wikipedia

A variety of 19th century boats meandering the bay. Small sailboats, tugboats, steamboats, and even larger vessels seem to be traveling different, and chaotic, directions.

While not listed as a manufacturer or supplier on the map index, 1610 W Superior St. was the site of the original Duluth Pack Company store. This is probably due to the fact that the "company" was was a leather and shoe repair store in 1882, and likely located in a different part of town. When French-Canadian immigrant, Camille Poirier, did patent the original Duluth Pack in 1882, his store gained popularity. He soon opened a wholesale store, Poirier Tent and Awning which later became Duluth Tent and Awning and eventually the Duluth Pack Company.

The Shattuck school opened in 1858, but this location was not built until 1866, only two years prior to construction of this map.

Increases in the town population led to the need for more than one school.

St. Mary's (originally the girls school) was founded in 1966, the same year that the new building for Shattuck (originally the boy's school) was completed.

The schools combined in 1972 and Shattuck-St. Mary's still exists as a coeducational boarding school today.

Hasting Courthouse/City Hall

Site of the Hastings Courthouse planned construction, designed by A.M. Radcliffe and completed in 1871. Originally the Hastings Courthouse, then the Dakota County Courthouse, and now the Hastings City Hall, the building still stands today and is the second-oldest surviving courthouse in Minnesota.

State law originally didn't require public schools to educate on American Indian history, but it has since become mandatory to teach young Minnesotans about the troubled past, including the Dakota War of 1862. The war began along the Minnesota River, four years after Minnesota became a state. Battles incited following disputes between numerous Dakota and Sioux tribes, as food and supplies were withheld by Indian agents.

Lake City is the birthplace of water skiing, invented by resident Ralph Samuelson in 1922.

The town holds annual Water Ski Days with three days of skiing-related activities and tournaments.

Downtown Luverne

"The site that would become Luverne was started as a stop on the mail route from Blue Earth, MN to Yankton, SD in 1867 by Philo Hawes. The John Leitze family and Miss Miranda Skinner maintained a “half way” house there for the first winter. Washburn Mill Factory

"In a matter of seconds, a series of thunderous explosions — heard 10 miles away in St. Paul — destroyed what had been Minneapolis' largest industrial building, and the largest mill in the world, along with several adjacent flour mills. Ard Godfrey House

The original site of the first University of Minnesota building. The school has since moved down the river but maintains two waterfront campuses (Eastbank and Westbank).

The location of this building now holds Chute Square Park and Arc Godfrey's first Saint Anthony home. Godfrey is credited as the leading millwright, helping build the first dam and sawmills in St. Anthony Falls. The home originally was at Main St. and 2nd Ave., but moved multiple times due to preservation needs. It is now the oldest surviving frame of a home in the Twin Cities (1848).

Turner Society

New Ulm was created in Turner values and ideals, with a "city plan reflected those values. The German Land Company hired Christian Prignitz to complete a new plan for New Ulm, filed in April 1858. This master plan for New Ulm expressed a grand vision of the city's future. At the heart of the community stood blocks reserved for Turner Hall, the county courthouse, and a public school, representing the political, social, and educational center of the community... Members obtained the means to support themselves — in harmony with nature — through the distribution of four-acre garden lots located outside of the residential area. Historian Dennis Gimmestad wrote, "The founders’ goals created a community persona that sets New Ulm apart from the Minnesota towns founded by land speculators or railroad companies.... Willis Hall

At the time this this was the site of Northfield College, known today as Carleton College. While the college was founded in 1866, Willis Hall was the first permanent campus building, completed in 1869 (time of map publication).

Rochester developed as a stagecoach stop between Saint Paul, Minnesota and Dubuque, Iowa. The RR Depot was a major city point, especially as railroads continued to develop across the state. New businesses and residents continued to grow and Rochester is now the third-largest Minnesota city.

Saint Cloud developed into three distinct areas; Upper Town, Middle Town, and Lower Town. The neighborhoods formed around deep ravines, which are still visible today.

Dakota Summer Lodge

Indigenous people can be seen overlooking the rapid development of St. Paul. In the early 1850s, Dakota nations were relocated by the U.S. government to live alongside the Mississippi River. "But Minnesota's non-native population grew nearly 30x in between 1850 and 1860, leaving many members of the Dakota without crucial land and resources." MSP Magazine

Second Minnesota State Capitol

This is the second Minnesota State Capitol building, but not the current one. The first building burnt down in a fire in 1881 and the Capitol seen here was completed in 1883. The second iteration stood until 1937, when it was demolished for the existing building to begin construction.

Nicknamed "the Birthplace of Minnesota, Stillwater is the site of signage for many treaties between the US government and Ojibwa and Dakota nations. The treaties allowed for settlement in the area to begin. Years later, conversations in regards to state territory were also held in Stillwater, leading Minnesota to officially become a territory in 1849 and a state in 1858. Wikipedia
