The Sudarium of Saint Veronica is a Christian relic consisting of a cloth said to bear an image of the Holy Face of Jesus. According to tradition, the cloth was used by Saint Veronica to wipe the blood and sweat from Jesus's face as he carried the cross to his crucifixion. The name "sudarium" is Latin for sweat-cloth. The story of the image's origin is related to the sixth Station of the Cross. Various images have been claimed to be the original relic, as well as early copies of it. The Sudarium is a contact relic containing the print-like impression of the savior’s face. Claude Mellan engraved Christ’s portrait in one seemingly unbroken line, and his work is known for its extraordinary technical virtuosity and uplifting quality12.
