A short history of the atlas created by Jan Huyghen Van Linschoten and also the history of Linschoten. >>> perplexity >>>Jan Huyghen van Linschoten (1563–1611) was a Dutch traveler, merchant, and cartographer whose works reshaped European maritime trade. Born in Haarlem, he moved to Spain as a youth and later served as secretary to the Portuguese Archbishop of Goa from 1583 to 1589. During his years in India, he secretly copied Portugal’s top-secret charts and navigational data on East Indies routes, which had been closely guarded for nearly a century. After returning to the Netherlands, he published this knowledge in 1596 in his monumental Itinerario: Voyage ofte Schipvaert naer Oost ofte Portugaels Indien.wikipedia+2The Itinerario was both an atlas and a nautical compendium, featuring detailed maps of the East and West Indies, sailing instructions, and depictions of Asian ports. It served as the first comprehensive guide for Dutch, English, and French voyages to Asia, ultimately ending Portugal’s monopoly over Eastern trade. The work’s maps provided accurate routes, coastlines, and maritime hazards, empowering navigators to safely cross the Indian Ocean and reach Southeast Asia. The atlas became essential reading for early voyagers and guided expeditions such as Cornelis de Houtman’s voyage to Java. Linschoten’s publication directly contributed to the establishment of the Dutch and British East India Companies and marked a turning point in the global age of exploration.nwcartographic+2https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Huyghen_van_Linschotenhttps://exhibits.stanford.edu/ruderman/catalog/ws597jn7236https://nwcartographic.com/blogs/essays-articles/map-maker-biography-jan-huygen-van-linschoten-1563-1611https://www.helmink.com/mapmakers/linschoten/Jan-Huygen-van-Linschotenhttps://www.britannica.com/biography/Jan-Huyghen-van-Linschotenhttps://rutter-project.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/artigoreys-gheschrift.pdfhttps://whowaswho-indology.info/3837/linschoten-jan-huyghen-van/https://blogs.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/maps/2025/09/04/the-itinerary-of-jan-huygen-van-linschoten/https://www.nlb.gov.sg/main/article-detail?cmsuuid=26011fea-a208-4b1e-a5bc-632568e019d2https://www.vintage-maps.com/en/linschoten-jan-huygen-van-43 David Rumsey - Linschoten Atlas of 1638
