Abstract for Fuat Sezgin Conf Nov 2025:
In a world of constructs, maps serve as mirrors for the territorial ordering of geographical space. Memory of loss and belonging coupled with the desire for control cluster together through boundaries and nomenclature to create the imagined spaces that make up every map. These spaces can be read to reveal socio-political messages buried below the surface of the lines and forms. In this presentation, I analyze the well-known yet little studied KMMS-type world map nestled in a magnificent (31.6 m x 79 cm) mid-sixteenth century imperial Ottoman genealogical scroll—the Tomar-ı Hümayun—prepared for none other than one of the most famous sultans, Sultan Süleyman.
