“Hello folks,
It seems I am a bit slow, about writing, but that hunt in your last paper, took effect. I reckon I’m more one, of the few, that just don’t get around to write very often.
We arrived here, in the latter part of January. I’m sure we were some spectacle, all bundled up it was hard to sleep with all the planes flying around, but soon became accustomed to the noise.
After ten days of instruction, we were assigned to the assembly and repair unit. This building itself extends over an area, nearly equal to, two city blocks.
The above view, in the letter head, shows about ten percent of the Maine vase. Maybe you can get some idea how large the base really is.”

I’ve never eaten so much dust as I did during our maneuvers in my whole life, dust for breakfast, dinner, and supper, even when we sleep. Believe or not.
Well Joe I’ve been in the army now for 17 months and I am still fortunate to be in the Country.
I am planning on coming home again some time in September. Will be there to see you.

“Hi Sang,
Did I have a pleasant surprise this Sunday morning. When I received my mail there was a copy of the “Lewis Safeguard” now that should be enough but it wasn’t, it wasn’t for me but for my brother who is in the navy and has the same rate as I. Not having seen him for well once a year it gave me the feeling that this is a pretty small world.
Every thing is great here. We see a lot of pictures (they call them here). And can go to dance any time we are free. The girls here have learned to do almost any step the yanks can do. Pubs are open on half hour at noon at a five a.m. One can get a couple glasses of beer if you are lucky. Liquid, just isn’t. Food is very good. And we got all the steak we want. The people here are very friendly (especially the girls.)

Just a few lines to let you know where I am. I can’t tell you exactly where but I’m in North Africa. It’s been raining the last few days so it’s muddy to the devil. We just finished a turkey dinner so I feel a lot better now. I’ve sure been traveling a lot since I’ve been in the service. Once here I’ve visited Casablanca, Oran, Algiers and Mateaur so I haven’t stayed in one place to[o] long. Thanx much for the palatable presents. A rare treat after nothing but stale peanut bars for months. I have completed my basics + am going to school. It’s been almost mild here but I prefer Minn. - blizzards + all. Last week we bivouacked on Polent for three days. Slept in pup tents. Altho[ugh] we had an eight blankets to a tent we nearly froze our near extremities.
Crawled there the infiltration course + it’s a long 75 yards. Steady stream of bullets a few inches over head, charges of T.N.T. being exploded a few feet away + lots of barbed wire entanglements crawl under. I did a pretty fair imitation of a mole + scooped up about ten lbs. of terra firms. It’s a pretty good…”

“Dear Marsh,
Well I got your letter today and was glad to hear from you. We have been pretty busy the last five weeks and haven’t had much time off. So Matt and Beck are expecting to go into the army? Well if they’re still around when you get this tell them to damn hard the first four or five weeks then it slacks off a little. One really gets sore at the world them first weeks but you get used to it. There must not be many of the bunch left that were there when I left.
Did Joe Hanslik quit the ball team or quit his job altogether? Sometimes I wish I was back at Lewis too, but most of the time I’m glad I’m in the army and doing my share. When we get up at 3 o’clock in the morning and work hard till five o’clock and then have to go on night operations until midnight really makes people to wish for different things. I might get a furlough in about 9 or 10 months and I’ll come over to Lewis with a couple gallons of whiskey and really set the place back where it should be. “Dear Manly,
Hi! Received your letter + pictures yesterday. Sure glad to hear from you. Well I’ve left Texas and am up here in Denver and really glad to be here especially during the summer. I’ve been up here for a month now and am going to photography school trying to learn how to be a photographer. It’s a really interesting course though. They keep a fellow on the ball here with two hours of P.T. [physical training] a day and we march to everything we do. Seems like basic training all over again, but am getting into pretty good shape. School lasts for six hours a day and I’m going on the C shift starting today which is from 6:30 to 12:30A.M. We change shifts every three weeks.”

"I’m going to branch out or major in advanced lab. Work which starts on your eighth week after seven weeks of basic training. I’m on detach service and am supposed to go back to San Angelo. Texas about the first of August, but don’t think I’ll stay there for long.
Glenn is an upperclassman in pre-flight now so is getting along O.K. I suppose Lois is about to go to the hospital now any day. Just think- I’ll be an uncle too. I can’t picture Gary as a “father” though. My wife + big son which is almost 13 months old, are coming out here the latter part of June and stay for the rest of the time I’m here, so am kind of looking forward to that.
Well how is Lewis coming along. I get your paper and really enjoy reading it. I miss playing golf + basketball, but I did play nice (golf) the day before I left Texas. I better close for now + I’ll write later - Say hello to everybody -

I imagine I better start writing a letter before you get the idea that I have forgotten you all + the good times we use to have a Nick’s Bowling Alley’s - isn’t that right Otto.
I know I should have come down to the plant when I was home on my leave but as you know I had a lot of things to do when I was home.
I surely would like to be back again. But the way things are now I don’t know if I’m going or coming.
I went through boot camp + figured that after that was over things would be a lot better but after I got back from my leave I was sent to Bremerton Washington + assigned to a ship. My ship is a Sea Plane Tender, so I have got good duty..."

“I have been going to gunnery school, fire fighting school + others so you see I am kept plenty busy. I even go to night school for a few hours some nights too.
I have gained a few pounds but since I came to Bremerton + think I am losing the food is lousy + when it is good one doesn’t get enough.
Get up at six o’clock every morning + sit around until 8:30 before we muster in. It’s foolish to get up so early + waste that good sleep. When I used to be at the plant at 7 o’clock I could sleep until 6:45 + get there a 1/2 hour late but here it is different.
Well now that I have written I want some letters from you all too. That includes you too OTTO. I know you are all doing all you can + you can count on me to hold me end up even if I don’t crave it too much. (over)”

Well don’t be to surprised. I finally found enough time to drop you a line. Well I suppose you know by now where I am. But I will say it was quite a break for me, as for how long I am going to stay I don’t know. This sure is a beautiful place if you don’t believe me ask, Bill Beck, he sure can tell you what’s all about it. But there is quite a shortage on women down here, especially white girls.
