Hi Tom,
I was thinking of you this weekend, because my youngest and I went with friends to Prospect Mountain for some nordic skiing. We're beginners and just learning the sport. We LOVE the location and exploring Prospect's trails, but each time we've been (three times now), we've struggled with their trail map.
Have you ever been to Prospect Mountain? Have you run into this?
We're not skiers, so maybe part of this is us getting used to these types of maps and the colors used. As a neuroscientist and educator, I'm trying to figure out what it is about this map that confuses now multiple sets of people I've been to Prospect with -- maybe it's the multiple lodges, the fact you enter and use the lodge at the bottom left of the map, but notice the one in the mid-center first, or the colors of the trails aren't all defined within the map key, and add to that we've never noticed any markers or signs on the actual trails themselves to cue you of where you actually are on the map when you're out on the trails.
Anyways, if I was taking your Winter Study class on maps, this is one that I'd be proposing a project to analyze and work on to help others understand it better.
