Le Mobilier National

The Mobilier National, a prestigious institution in France, has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. Its origins can be traced to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, established during the reign of Henri IV (1553-1610)[1][4]. This royal administration was responsible for managing furniture and objects in the royal residences, ensuring that the monarch's living spaces were properly furnished as they traveled between various palaces.

## Development Under Louis XIV

The institution gained significant prominence during the reign of Louis XIV (1638-1715). In 1662, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister, established the Manufacture des Meubles de la Couronne, which later became known as the Manufacture des Gobelins[1][2]. This royal factory brought together various Parisian workshops, including tapestry makers, cabinetmakers, and other artisans, to create luxurious furnishings for the royal palaces.

## Evolution and Expansion

Over time, the institution expanded its scope and capabilities:

- In the 1660s, Colbert founded the Beauvais tapestry manufacture[1].
- The Savonnerie carpet manufacture, created under Louis XIII, was incorporated into the institution[1].
- In the 1930s, the three historic textile manufacturers - Les Gobelins, La Savonnerie, and Beauvais - were united within the Mobilier National[1].

## Transition to Modern Era

With the fall of the monarchy and the establishment of the Third Republic in 1870, the institution was renamed Mobilier National[1][4]. It continued its mission of furnishing state buildings and preserving France's rich furniture heritage.

## Contemporary Role

Today, the Mobilier National serves a dual purpose of creation and conservation[2]. It oversees the production of contemporary furniture, tapestries, and other decorative arts while also maintaining and restoring its vast collection of historical pieces. The institution manages approximately 130,000 items, including furniture, tapestries, ceramics, and chandeliers[4].

In recent years, the Mobilier National has taken steps to modernize its approach. In 2020, it announced plans to auction some items to support healthcare workers during the pandemic and to commission new works from contemporary artists and artisans[4]. This blend of historical preservation and contemporary creation ensures that the Mobilier National remains a vital institution in France's cultural landscape.
